About Joseph Benevento
Joseph “Joey” Benevento recently moved to Salt Lake City from sunny Southern California and finds his passion in fitness and traveling. This devotion is the result of 10+ years serving as a former Navy SEAL officer, with daily physical training and frequent travel requirements. It would be extremely difficult to handle the rigorous Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training without being dedicated to a healthy lifestyle. Now that Joey is a civilian, he is currently focusing his training to attain a peak level of physical fitness before starting his next career in Sales and Marketing. On top of this, he is taking advantage of this opportunity to travel and backpack in scenic places across the country.
As a young man, Joseph played soccer and ran cross-country and track in high school. He continued his interest in soccer via an intramural sports league at the University of Florida, where he participated in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program. From a young age, he knew he wanted to be a Navy SEAL, so he focused his physical training on calisthenics, running and swimming to prepare himself for BUD/S.
In the summer of 2006, Joey began training with BUD/S Class 261. Weekly timed four-mile runs, two-mile ocean swims and obstacle courses allowed students to continue training, but the harsh daily physical training (or PT) allowed him to experience countless exercises and training regimens to include Log PT, soft sand runs and sprints, and hours of circuit-style workouts. He hopes to inspire those around him to become more aware of their physical fitness and to help others learn just how powerful the human body – and more importantly, the mind – truly is. During SEAL training, Joseph saw this first-hand on a near daily basis, but particularly during Hell Week, when students are pushed beyond limits they previously thought were not possible.
Completing 120 hours of constant physical activity, running with rubber boats on heads, cold-water immersion, and endless PT sessions served as a clear example that the human body can endure much more than you think. Joey is thankful to have had the privilege to experience this breakthrough and plans to strengthen and hone this skill for the rest of his life.
However, Joseph found it difficult to maintain a peak level of fitness on a daily basis and admits it is easy to get out of shape, especially while working a desk job or long hours with limited spare time to work out. Now that Joey has separated from the Navy, he can spend hours a day in the gym or exploring his new home of Salt Lake City. But as a new career is looming on the horizon, Joseph plans to turn to shorter circuit-style, or High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts to maximize his limited free time.
In the military, Joseph spent the majority of his career traveling to the Middle East. Iraq, Afghanistan and multiple locations in the Arabian Peninsula are among the countries he visited. Some of the more popular spots among tourists are the Dead Sea and Petra in Jordan when he traveled there for a training exercise in 2012.
Aside from exploring the immediate surroundings of Salt Lake City, he plans to visit Havasu Creek Falls, Horseshoe Bend, and Grand Cayman, as well as explore some of the beautiful national parks in the United States.
